firewire ip & ulkoinen kovalevy

Macmaailmassa 8/2004 oli juttua firewire ip:stä jota en ikinä ollut kokeillutkaan. Tästä tulikin mieleeni sellainen kysymys, että pystyykö ulkoisen firewire -levyn kytkemään kahden koneen välille? Eli että sekä pöytäkoneeni että läppärini voisi samaan aikaa vaihdella keskenään tiedostoja sekä käyttää yhteisiä tiedostoja ulkoiselta firewire-levyltä?

Mielenkiintoinen kysymys, tuota pitää ehtoolla kotona kokeilla ellei joku tiedä..

Mulla ei ole kotona kun yksi oikeanlainen firewire-piuha enkä viitsisi ostella ennen kuin tiedän toimii lainkaan...

Muistaakseni ei onnistu tuollainen kytkentä. Jos joku kuitenkin haluaa kokeilla, siitä vaan...

Siten onnistuu, että toinen kone jakaa sen. Toinen (järkevämpi) vaihtoehto on ostaa ip-kovalevy, kuten logearin (http://www.logear.com) BOSS, tai LaCien vastaava.

FireWire IP: Hatara muistikuva jonkinlaisesta sisäverkon luonnista kahden koneen välille. Jos joku jaksais tarkistaa esim xlr8yuormac.comin sivuilta...
En kokeilisi tuota "jaettua" FW-kovoa ainakaan sellaisen kovon kanssa, jolla jotain tärkeää ;-)

Apple IP over Firewire Preview Release

Although I've not tried it and probably won't in the current form, Apple's Firewire Developer page has a page with a Preview Release of IP over Firewire. Here's a clip from the page:

"Now the IP over FireWire Preview Release adds support for using the Internet Protocol - commonly known as TCP/IP - over FireWire. With this software installed, Macintosh computers and other devices can use existing IP protocols and services over FireWire, including AFP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc. In all cases, Rendezvous can be used if desired for configuration, name resolution, and discovery.

The preview release adds a new Kernel Extension that hooks into the existing network services architecture. Using the existing Network Preferences Pane, users can add FireWire as their IP network node to connect and communicate between two machines.

Now developers interested in using the Internet Protocol (IP) over FireWire may download the IP over FireWire Preview Release."


The Apple page has a form for downloading the PR release.

There's a previous commercial product called FireNet from Unibrain, sometimes bundled on the PC side with some products like Creative Lab's Audigy sound cards w/FW port that also had this capability. Some comments here from mac users I think a year or more ago that didn't sound very positive, but that was a very early version. I never kept up with it personally. (They note OS 9 and OS X compatibility, see the linked page for more info if you're interested... but it's not free of course.)

Niin ja mitä muuten tulee itse IP over Firewireen, se toimii mainiosti, ja olenkin käyttänyt sitä usein sen jälkeen kun siitä tuli sisäänrakennettu ominaisuus Pantheriin (Jaguarissa vaati erillisiä ohjelmia).
Se on kätevä tapa erittäin nopeaan tiedostonsiirtoon.
