Many times you might receive an email with an attachment called winmail.dat. The file is sent from people using Microsoft Outlook as their email program. The file allows Outlook users to send Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) information along with the email so that it retains the look and feel of the document with formatting, fonts, and colors when its received by another Microsoft Outlook user.

Unfortunately, the file is only relevant and used by Microsoft Outlook. Users of Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, and other email programs will receive the attachment called winmail.dat with the email.

The file is attached to the email because the original sender is sending emails in Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format instead of Plain Text format.

How to Configure Outlook NOT to send Winmail.dat attachments

To Turn off Rich Text sending for messages in Microsoft Outlook

1) Click on Tools
2) Click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
3) In the Send in this Message Format list, select Plain Text, and then click OK.

This will set your default sending method to Plain Text, which will lose your special formatting options with fonts, colors, etc. However everyone, no matter what email program they are using, will now be able to receive your email with no problems.

TNEF's Enough allows Macs to read and extract files from Microsoft TNEF stream files. The files are usually received by SMTP based e-mail programs from Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook users. The SMTP based e-mail program will usually receive either a MIME attachment named "winmail.dat" or a MIME attachment with the type "application/ms-tnef."
The file is a rich text (or MAPI) message that is sent from Outlook to Exchange. When Exchange sends the message to an outside server it writes the MAPI message as a MIME attachment. The unfortunate side effect of this plan is if the Outlook user has someone in their address book as a person who can receive "Rich Text" then the user will receive the TNEF file whether the user uses Outlook or not.

Kun lähetät Microsoft Outlookilla liitteitä sisältäviä viestejä Internetin välityksellä käyttäen Microsoft Outlookin RTF-muotoa, jotkin vastaanottajat kertovat viestin sisältävän ylimääräisen tiedoston nimeltä Winmail.dat. Winmail.dat-tiedosto on yleensä erittäin pieni, mutta sitä ei voi avata viestissä. Alkuperäinen viestin liite ei ole aina erillään Winmail.dat-liitetiedostosta. Se saattaa sisältyä Winmail.dat-liitetiedostoon.

Tämä ongelma ilmenee, koska Winmail.dat-tiedostoa käytetään säilyttämään muotoilu, jonka lähettävä asiakasohjelma sisällyttää viestiin, mutta vastaanottava asiakasohjelma ei tunnista Winmail.dat-tiedostoa. Outlookissa Winmail.dat-tiedosto sisältää RTF-muotoiluohjeet. Tätä muotoilua käytetään Microsoft Outlookin RTF-muodon kanssa sekä silloin, kun Microsoft Wordia käytetään sähköpostieditorina.

Ratkaisu

Voit ratkaista tämän ongelman käyttämällä vain teksti -muotoa. Voit tehdä tämän seuraavasti:

• Valitse Työkalut-valikosta Asetukset ja valitse sitten Sähköpostin muoto.
• Valitse Käytä luotaessa muotoa -kohdassa Vain teksti ja valitse sitten OK.

HUOMAUTUS: Jotta tietyille RTF-muotoa käyttäville vastaanottajille ja muille vain teksti -muotoa käyttäville vastaanottajille voidaan lähettää, asetus on määritettävä vastaanottajalle omassa osoitteistossa tai vastaanottajan yhteystietotietueessa.

Seuraavien toimien avulla voit poistaa RTF-muodon vastaanottajan määritteestä omassa osoitteistossa:

• Valitse Työkalut-valikosta Osoitteisto.
• Valitse Näytä nimet osoitteistossa -kohdassa Oma osoitteisto.
• Valitse vastaanottaja, jolle haluat lähettää ainoastaan vain teksti -muotoisia viestejä ja valitse sitten Tiedosto-valikosta Ominaisuudet.
• Poista SMTP-protokollan Yleiset-välilehdessä Lähetä aina tälle vastaanottajalle Microsoft Exchangen RTF-muodossa -valintaruudun valinta ja valitse sitten OK.

Määritä vain teksti -asetus vastaanottajan yhteystietotietueessa seuraavasti:

• Avaa vastaanottajan tietue Yhteystiedot-kansiosta.
• Kaksoisnapsauta vastaanottajan sähköpostiosoitetta.
• Valitse Sähköpostiominaisuudet-valintaikkunan Internet-muoto-kohdassa Lähetä vain tekstinä.
