Does anyone has a working A-Link RR24ap and AEBS?

Hello,

I have a small network which goes like this:

wired
--> adsl copper from outlet --> A-Link RR24AP(+) --> Airport Extreme Base Station (6F9170ZD31U)
wireless
2x Imac intel
1x appletv
1x powerbook
3 iphone/ipod
We're plagued with irregular problems. 1 steady problem is loading kartat.eniro.fi, the map does not load. maps.google.com loads sometimes, openstreetmap.org always loads.

Sometimes there is no connection at all for 1-20 seconds.

I understand there are way too many variables and when I look at all the things I can fill in at the adsl router and AEBS it doesn't yet make much sense to copy them all here.

Some important settings on the AEBS
Tab: Internet Connection
- Connect using: Ethernet
- Connection Sharing: (Off) Bridge Mode

Tab: TCP/IP
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
IP Address: 10.0.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 10.0.0.2
DNS (tried many but no difference)

Does anyone has a clue where to start? The ADSL router (adapter) has been reset to factory settings.

Hi,

I had similar problems with my own network. The root cause was not so good modem/router that couldn't handle many connections when nat and dhcp were configured on. This caused the internet connection to break every few minutes.

Could you configure the A-link as bridged and your airport extreme to handle the DHCP and NAT stuff? This would most likely solve your problems if the root cause is same as I had.

I will try to do this but the list of options is overwhelming :-(
Do you have an idea where to start to look?
I have found this page http://www.elisa.fi/asiakastuki/19910.1 ... 4api-wlan/ where they explain to set the adsl router to bridge mode but also use the wireless function of this same router. I will try this and see what happens next.

Hi,

You do not need to enable the wifi in the modem because your airport extreme can do that much better. I assume that your extreme wifi is n standard model.

In the manual from elisa:
Step 7: Internet service provider: Bridging is ok, but not the dhcp. Try to configure so that it is only bridged.
Step 12: Disable the wifi.

After you have managed to configure the modem as bridging only you can not access the modem from www browser. This tells that you configured the modem correctly (well at least in most cases). Now it just passes the internet connection to your airport extreme and each client will get ip address from your ISP. Now it is important to configure your airport extreme to use dhcp and nat. When you have configured the AE each mac, ipod and so on should have ip address that starts with 192.168.x.x

Hope that this helps. I also know that configuring these modems can sometimes be really horrible experience, but I believe you can manage.

well, that was an adventure. Seemed everything went more wrong each time I tried something.

It is very likely not ideal what I have but it works after almost 2 hours of trying. My current IP address is 84.251.33.1 which is not something I am used to have. I had to revert to use bridge mode on the AEBS as there were constant NAT errors, something about double NAT address.

The adsl modem has now these settings:
ADSL Operation Mode (WAN):
ISP : ISP uses Bridging
Protocol: Bridging
VPI/VCI: 0/33
AAL5 Encapsulation: LLC

Network Layer Parameters (WAN):
Management IP address: 10.0.0.2

DHCP Parameters:
Function: Disable

Does this look right to you?

What should the AEBS settings be?
The AEBS IP address is now on 10.0.0.4
The IP address from the computer I write this message from is: 84.251.33.1
subnet mask: 255.255.240.0

Doesn't make sense to me as I would expect it to be on a 10.0.0.x address and 255.255.255.0 subnet

Hi,

Can you still access your modem and do changes? You should not be able to do if it is strictly in bridge mode.

Try to find NAT setting from your modem and disable it. It seems to be under Firewall/NAT Services.

You are right that ip address should be something else. Now your IP address is given from your ISP. Your extreme should assign the ip address to you.

I do not have airport extreme, but I have an express. At the Airport Utility choose manual setup -> Internet -> Connection Sharing. Now change this to "Share a public IP address". At least in airport express configuration you do not need to anything else but update the ae.

First of all, thank you for helping so much. I really appreciate this.

The link is very good but it looks so different from the adsl administration tool I have to use I feel too intimated. AT http://www5.sonera.fi/ohjeet/ADSL-modeemin_asetukset is some information but not specific for my adsl router/modem.

I have attached 3 screenshots which gives the current settings. I can connect to the net and that is already something. Maybe you can see if at the adsl side something is still wrong? If not I will look at what AEBS has to offer for variations :-)

These settings looks ok to me. But there is still some setting wrong because at least to my knowledge, you should not be able to connect to modem if it is in direct bridge mode. Did you find any NAT setting that was enabled? You might also want to reboot the modem. I have had problems with some modems and some times the software reboot just does not work as it should.

Extreme settings also looks good. I usually configure the local network ip addresses to start with 192.168.x.x What kind of IP address does your mac now have?

First the local imac settings, you won't believe this but this is what I have. In the system profile it reads:
Addresses: 84.251.33.1
Configuration Method: DHCP
Router: 84.251.32.1
Subnet Masks: 255.255.240.0

And in the System Preference-Network-Airport-Advanced Settings_TCP/IP it reads
configure: using dhcp
ipv4 address: 10.0.1.3
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
router: 10.0.1.1

Is your iMac connected via ethernet cable to modem and airport to extreme? Or just via airport? The airport information is as it should be.

:-) It feels like someone is playing tricks on me. Now the ip address on my local mac is:
10.0.1.3
subnet: 255.255.255.0
router:10.0.1.1

The mac I now work on is connected to AEBS via the wireless network. The AEBS is connected from the WAN port to the adsl LAN port

So everything works now? All your devices can connect to web? One more thing: If you have to connect some device via ethernet do not connect it to modem. Connect it to extreme. Otherwise it is out of your local network and other devices can not see it.
