New Samsung Memory Could Mean a 32GB iPod Nano
Topic: Storage
Today's announcement that Samsung has developed 16-gigabit NAND flash memory has the usual round of gadget sites buzzing excitedly to themselves. But why should you care? The answer is simple: music.
Based on 50-nanometer architecture, the new 16-gigabit flash will enable flash storage capacities of up to 32GB on a single card. And that means big storage for tiny devices like cell phones and music players. Soon you won't have to sacrifice an entire shirt pocket to carry half your music collection everywhere you go. And you'll no longer have to worry about carrying a bunch of extra flash cards around for your digital camera.
How long it will take for these high-capacity flash drives to trickle down to the consumer market is anybody's guess. But I'm expecting yet another big announcement from Apple by Christmas time.
